Back in 1997, I couldn't actually believe that any device would allow me to hear again - it just seemed too incredible, and I thought it couldn't possibly happen to me. As I wrote in my first book, I even feared that I had forgotten how to hear, and wouldn't be a successful CI user. That all changed, of course, once I was activated. But it was these emotions and fears that motivated me to write my first book, and then the second.
